Downtown Eastside Tree Planters

I had the opportunity to paint two concrete tree planters in downtown Vancouver, on the corner of Main Street and Alexander Street.

From the smooth, chubby fingers of a newborn to the crackling wrinkles of an older person, hands are the holders of stories, and represent community. With this theme, the first planter aims to inspire people to come together to ask for help, offer assistance, and build a place to call home.

It was important to me to honour the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations in my second piece. Plants traditionally used by First Peoples of coastal BC wrap themselves around the planter and bring a sense of nature into an area otherwise lacking of plants.
